Paul Grebner bibliography 0.50

Update 0.50 This update starts filling in Grebner's appearances in England,the last empty category in the bibliography, with entries drawn from the ESTC. I haven't started listing the English works that mention Grebner in passing or give short excerpts but do not mention him on the title page. A problem yet to be addressed is how the English broadsides and pamphlets are related to the excerpts that appear in compilations.

I've also reordered the categories to something that makes a bit more sense based on what I've found so far: Early printed works, manuscripts, German editions, Dutch editions, British editions, other European editions, and secondary literature.

Update 0.43. The early Dutch editions now include the hybrids of Grebner's second prophecy and "Friess II," and I've simplified the early Dutch pamphlets, now that I see that the later pamphlets use different titles for what is in most respects the same work. The relationship between the Dutch pamphlets of ca. 1590 and those of 1599-1610 needs some work. I've also added an unattested early English and French edition, and the manuscripts listed by Carlos Gilly in the footnotes of his recent article.

Update 0.40. This update adds the following:

• Three encyclopedic entries on Grebner from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
• Six German pamphlets from the early seventeenth century indexed under "Paul Gräbner."
• One more Dutch pamphlet from 1599.
• The entries IV-VII have been renumbered as V-VIII.

Update 0.37. I've added two Dutch pamphlets dated 1605 attributed to "Jerrassemus van Eydenborch," which combine Grebner's "Second Marvelous Prophecy" of 1599 with the second prophecy of Wilhelm Friess and a series of prognostications for 1605-11 whose source is not yet identified. The relationship, if any, is unclear to the prognostications for the years up to 1609 or 1610 attributed to Grebner in other editions of this time period. I've also tried to assign the early Dutch editions to particular works, but this is still very tentative.

Update 0.35. Something that complicates tracking down Grebner's bibliography is that some works are cataloged under the name "Paulus Secundus," while some are cataloged under both "Grebner" and "Secundus." This update adds several "Secundus" pamphlets (IIIb.8-11). I suspect that we're close to a complete list of extant early German and Dutch pamphlets at this point. Even with a list of editions, however, we still don't know yet how many different works are represented here, and which titles represent which works.

We also discover one more mystery: IIIb.10, Extract vande prophecie, door eenen ghenaemt Paulus Secundus, der vrijer consten student, wt een nacht visioen, twelck hem gheopenbaert is, den 24. dach april, anno 1601. The title is clearly patterned on those of Dutch 1590 editions, but the night vision of 24 April 1601 picks the same date as the night vision of Wilhelm Friess in the second Friess prophecy. Emden, the place of publication, is the same as the 1639 edition of Friess II. The printer, "Hans Wilrinck," is otherwise unknown. Too many coincidences. I won't be happy until I see a facsimile.

Update 0.30: Plugging Grebner's name as an author into Google Books to see what pops up is also useful. It turns up 120+ titles, however, many of which are duplicates. If we restrict by date, we discover another mystery.
I.3: Michigan UL and Utrecht UL own copies of Nabal: comoedia sacra desumpta ex I. Samuel XXV. cap. / nunc primum conscripta et aedita a M. Paulo Grebenro Nivimontano (Antwerp: Diest, 1566). The name, place, genre, and printer fit Grebner's other early Antwerp works quite well. However, the title seems far too similar to Rudolf Gwalther's 1549 work Nabal. Rodolphi Gualtheri tigurini comoedia sacra, quae inscribitur nabal, desumpta ex i. samuelis xxv. cap. nunc primum conscripta et aedita (VD16 W 1125). How did Grebner's name end up attached to what looks like Gwalther's work? Did Grebner just happen to compose his own work with the same title? Probably not. There are two Nabal comedies by other writers (VD16 M 5813 and VD17 32:640834B), but a quick glance suggests that they're both based on Gwalther's work. The Michigan catalog lists both Grebner and Gwalther as authors.

IIIb.1: The Huntington Library owns what looks like the only known copy of a 1590 edition of one of Grebner's prophecies in Latin.
VII: A recent essay by Carlos Gilly looks like it has quite a bit to say about Grebner and his works.

Update 0.2: For an author like Grebner whose works cross national borders, a good place to look is the Universal Short Title Catalogue. Checking the USTC adds several new items to the list, but it's not yet a complete list, and still limited to the years before 1601.

Three questions are immediately raised by the bibliography as it exists at this point: Why were the earliest works of Grebner, from Saxony, printed in Antwerp? And why is there a nearly 30-year gap between his Latin printed works and the pamphlets that begin to appear in 1590? The 10-year head start of the Dutch pamphlets over the German ones printed in Hamburg is mysterious as well. What are these 1589/1599 Hamburg editions they refer to, but are not otherwise attested?

Version 0.1 To make sense of Paul Grebner, we need a complete bibliography of his works, which are preserved in manuscript and print in several different countries and across several centuries. The one modern list of his works is his entry in the CERL Thesaurus, which just scratches the surface. After establishing the bibliography, we would still need to figure out which texts are represented by each item, decide when each work was originally written, and determine if they should all be attributed to Grebner. A first attempt at organizing the bibliography might look like this. The works listed below only represent their categories. Completeness has been neither attempted nor attained in any respect.

IVa. Early Dutch editions
These appear to be four editions of one pamphlet in 1590, followed by eight editions of a second, related pamphlet in 1599-1605 (the two editions of the "Feldschlacht in Flandern" interpretation turn out to be slight abridgments of the second vision). The night visions 1601-1607 are hybrids of the second prophecy of Wilhelm Friess and the second Grebner pamphlet.
